Dundun and Djembe Workshop

March 15, 2015 @ 9:30 am - 11:30 am

$25

Dunduns, the bass drums of a West African rhythm ensemble, make up the melodic backbone of the rhythms played at certain festivals, rituals and special occasions in the Malinke tradition. Come and learn the Hamanah style of dundun playing where each of the three dunduns – dundunba (large), sangban (medium) and kenkeni (small) – is played by an individual. The player plays the drum using a stick with their strong hand and a small metal bell struck with a metal beater with the other hand. Together the different notes of the three drums create a melody that defines a particular rhythm.

In the first hour, participants will learn each bell and drum pattern for Dundunba, Sangban and Kenkeni for the rhythm Balakulanya. Participants will also learn variations and the ‘echauffement’, the ‘heating up’ or increase in speed and energy of the rhythm.

A one hour djembe workshop will follow covering accompaniment parts and arrangements (time permitting). The cost of the two-hour dundun and djembe workshop is $25 and the use of drums is included. The workshop is limited to a maximum of 12 participants. To book your spot, please email alex@therhythmconnection.com or text 0414 803 666
